Tomiño Taberna Gallega!

A Tribute to our roots

Tomiño Taberna Gallega is more than just a restaurant—it’s a heartfelt tribute to our roots and the cherished memories that shaped our love for food, family, and togetherness. The name “Tomiño” comes from a town on the Miño River in Galicia, Spain. It also holds deep personal meaning for us as a family. Our parents, Milagros and Joaquin, were immigrants from Tomiño. Having just married, they came to New York in their early 20s, carrying with them the traditions and flavors of Galicia. As the four González brothers, we spent our summers back in Tomiño, soaking in the vibrant culture, savoring the delicious dishes of our heritage, and creating lifelong memories.

A great deal of time was spent at our two grandmother’s houses that were only 200 meters away from each other. From the freshly prepared meals at Abuela Sara’s house to the laughter-filled family gatherings at Abuela Manuela’s, those moments of sharing food and family stories became the foundation of our inspiration. We must also mention the once-a-year visit to La Tia Rosa and Avelino’s house in the Barrio Do Rexidouro—this was truly farm-to-table at its simplest! It was in these simple yet profound experiences—surrounded by loved ones, good company, and unforgettable meals—that the vision for Tomiño Taberna Gallega was born.

Inspired by Galician Traditions

We did also eat out occasionally at the local ‘bares’ in La Plaza do Seixo—‘O Buraquiño,’ ‘La Purena,’ ‘La Nueva Colina,’ and ‘O Candil.’ These special places offered countless experiences with the locals. The ‘tomiñeses’ are technically not family, but still today, that’s exactly how they treat us and how we treat them. It is a special feeling that we hope to share with everyone that enters Tomiño Taberna Gallega in Nolita!

Before opening in October 2017, we spent countless hours immersing ourselves in the culinary traditions of Galicia, determined to bring its best flavors to New York City. During this journey, we partnered with Michelin-starred chef Lucía Freitas to design a menu that reflects the heart of Galician cuisine. We also brought on an exceptional team of opening chefs directly from Galicia, committed to creating the finest Galician and Spanish dishes.

Authenticity and Excellence in Every Bite

Today, nearly eight years later, that dedication remains strong. Our core kitchen team, led by Chef Julio Sanaicela, has been with us since day one, consistently delivering dishes that honor our vision. We take pride in using exceptional ingredients imported from Spain and crafting simple yet modern recipes that allow us to proudly represent both Tomiño and Galicia as a region. It’s this unwavering commitment to authenticity and quality that continues to guide us and inspire every ‘plato y copa’ that we serve.
